The Reassurances

“Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it,” 1 Thessalonians 5:24.

There is a saying I have heard passed around, “Eat, drink and be merry.” For years I thought it was from some war movie. As it turns out, its origin is in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 15:32. It is often paraphrased as “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.” It could be further paraphrased as “You only live once.” Most of the unbelieving world lives this way. Can we blame them? If this life is all we have, living it in the fast lane only makes sense. We cannot fault that logic; the heathen will act like heathens.

The problem is many Christians behave precisely the same way! Some forget the promise of eternal life we have been given and go through this life trying to extract every ounce of pleasure from it. The verse we referenced in 1 Corinthians addresses that mind-set. The problem with pleasure-seeking in this life is that it is often not God-honoring. What you and I should be seeking is a lifestyle that honors God. God has promised to return and claim His own, which is good enough for me.

In fact, God inspired Paul to deliver His promise once again in this epistle to the Thessalonians. Do you grasp that? That is how Scripture works; the words are God’s words to us. Therefore, God Himself is promising to come and claim us someday. Do you believe that? I challenge you to look in God’s Word for a single broken promise. I guarantee you will not find one. We know how He has told us to live, and we know He will come for us. Why do we sometimes persist in living as if this is all there is?

JUST A THOUGHT
If you truly think this life is the best you will ever have, you just might be in deep trouble.
