The Rock Higher Than I

King David certainly had his ups and downs during the course of his life. Chosen by God to lead Israel, he killed the giant Goliath. Before he could fulfill that calling, he had to flee to the desert chased by the jealous King Saul. Later, his own sinful actions brought division in his own family. This psalm may have been written during the time of David’s son Absalom’s rebellion against his own father. David’s cry from “the end of the earth” (verse 2), may have been a reflection of his emotional health. David was at the end of his rope, so to speak.

David was a man after God’s own heart. “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart” (Acts 13:22). Few would even question his status as one of God’s children. Yet, David was subject to many trials and tribulations during his life. Some, such as his persecution by Saul, were not his fault. On the other hand, many of David’s troubles were brought upon him by his own actions! David made some bad choices, and when He did the natural consequences of those actions unfolded. God protected David from the hatred of Saul because it was His plan that David become King of Israel. Even when David went his own way in sin, God was only a prayer away. That is true for God’s children even today. When we do His plan, he protects us. When we sin, He is only a prayer away.

JUST A THOUGHT: God never gives up on us. Even when we rebel, He will always welcome us back into fellowship with Him if we repent and ask for forgiveness.
