Why Israel Should Do It
“Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite,” Psalm 147:5.
Genesis tells us that on day four God made the sun, moon and stars. Verse 4 of this psalm says, “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.” Did you know that there is an official star naming registry? You can have a star named after you or a loved one. The chosen name will be entered into the International Space Registry. Seems like a good idea. Man looks out and realizes there are more stars than he can fathom. So why not let people name the stars or rather rename the stars? There are more stars in the universe than will ever be counted, but they already have a name given by the One who created them.
Man was created and put into the Garden of Eden to dress it and keep it (Genesis 2:15). It was Adam’s job to take care of the portion of the earth God had given him. First, man thinks he can do a better job than God at naming the stars. Second, God did give man some responsibility in taking care of His creation and has made it possible for man to view some of the greatness of the universe.
However, in Psalm 147, you read that God is the One who is the ultimate Master of His creation and takes care of it by His great power. His power has also been demonstrated in the New Testament by sending His Son for the salvation of mankind. He takes care of man by caring for the outcasts of the community, as Jesus did. He heals the broken hearted. First Peter 2:24 says we are healed by His stripes. He lifts the meek; Jesus was meek and lowly, an attribute we should follow.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Men often think they can control the created world around them. This is not true.
Instead, men need to praise the Lord for His greatness.
