A Faithful and Wise Servant
“Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing,” Matthew 24:45, 46.
Today, let us talk about the faithful employee who is always doing the right thing, all of the time. This person works like they do not even have a boss to report to. You could lock them in a room alone, and they would be steadily performing their assigned duties. They are not performing for show. They are working for a purpose higher than themselves. They work for things like the fabled work ethic. For the most part, these folks get justly and duly rewarded for their efforts. Because when the boss does show up, there they are, steady and sure.
God often uses His Word to show us a picture of spiritual things. Time and time again we read Scripture that promotes the virtue of hard work. Proverbs is full of them! Why does God care about how hard we work in real life? Because our behavior in temporal things reflects our behavior in spiritual things. When God inspires some writers to teach us the virtues of diligence in our work, He means far more than just being a good employee.
God expects us to be busy, first and foremost, with His kingdom’s work. When He comes back, how will He find you? Will you be curled up in a corner napping and find yourself explaining what you were up to? Or, will you be the good worker steady at it, knowing that no matter when He comes, you will be found doing His wishes?
JUST A THOUGHT: If we are staring up into the sky, patiently waiting for Jesus, then we need to stop and get busy doing His work instead.
