The Psalmist’s Invitation
“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes,” Psalm 118:9.
In the world today, there is a real tendency to worship celebrities, politicians and athletes. We listen to some star speak on something they are no expert on, and we hang onto their every word as if they had some expertise or authority.
This psalm is the celebration of the deliverance by God of some person or group from some unknown tribulation. We do not know precisely who or what it was, what matters is where our deliverance and salvation always originate. Of course, the source of our rescue is always God. Why do we forget that so often? Christians should especially understand this, but we insist that the right leader will turn things around. We expect that things can be changed from the top down if only the right man or woman is in place.
Christians already have the right leader. I assume here that you are a saved child of God. If so, you have the right leader. Who do you think will deliver you from the tribulations of this world? No sports star, celebrity or politician will ever change things. Why is that? Because people are people. We are fallen and degenerate. To change the world means we each have to change. Furthermore, we cannot change ourselves. However, the Lord still changes hearts and minds today. Where is your confidence? Is it in the Lord or some star? Have you been swept up in a cult of personality? If you have, return your confidence to where it belongs.
JUST A THOUGHT
If your confidence is anywhere besides God, then it is misplaced.
