The Best of All Possible Worlds

“Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth,” Psalm 124:6-8.

In these verses, the psalmist paints a vivid picture of deliverance. The idea of a bird escaping the grasp of a predator reveals the danger we face and the intervention of the Lord in our time of trouble. The psalmist attributes the victory not to human strength or strategy but to the divine intervention of God who made Heaven and earth.

“Blessed be the Lord” (verse 6) declares that their deliverance is not a result of their own might but is an act of God’s mercy and faithfulness. The phrase “not given us as a prey to their teeth” (verse 6) echoes the vulnerability of being prey; yet, the psalmist rejoices because God has thwarted the plans of the enemy.

The snare, representing the traps and schemes of the devil, is shattered by the omnipotent hand of the Lord. It symbolizes not only a release from immediate danger but a complete victory over the forces that sought to harm us.

As believers, we can draw profound spiritual truths from these verses. Our lives are often marked by snares and traps set by the enemy— temptations, trials and adversities—that seek to entangle and destroy. Yet, just as the bird escapes the fowler’s snare, we find our ultimate deliverance in the name of the Lord. Our help is not in our own abilities or resources, but in the Creator of Heaven and earth.

DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT
In times of trouble, let us echo the psalmist’s praise and acknowledge that our deliverance comes from the Lord.
