The Sinners and the Savior
“Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved,” Psalm 80:19.
How often did we warn our children not to do a certain thing, only to have them do it out of rebellion? Invariably, the very problem we had anticipated occurred, and our children would scream out to us for help. What did we do? We stepped in and saved them, of course. Why? Because they were our children. That is part of the deal when raising children; we protect them even if they are disobedient. That is the unwritten agreement we agree to when we choose to have children. While not precisely the same, it shadows God’s covenant or agreement with His children.
This psalm was likely written in Jerusalem after the ten northern tribes had broken the covenant of the Mosaic Law and slid into apostasy. This story was yet another repeat of Israelite history; they would apostatize, God would bring judgment, and then God would restore them when they called out to him. This psalm is the plea by the writer to restore His people. That was the nature of the Old Covenant; either party could break it, and the other side was released from it.
Today, there is a covenant as well. That is the New Covenant of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. On the cross, Jesus paid the sin debt for all mankind, and those who believe in Him are saved from the burden and penalty of their sin. Wonderfully, the New Covenant is permanent. We can never break it no matter what we do, and God will never break it because He has promised not to. Are you a partaker in the New Covenant?
JUST A THOUGHT
God has covenanted to save us when we believe on His son, Jesus Christ. Once we accept the promise of the covenant, God will never break it. We are secure forever in His hands.
