David and the Priest

“So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away,”

I Samuel 21:6.

The Christian life is not a smooth life of ease and comfort. The follower of Christ will not always have great success and vast wealth to their name. Granted, you will find many books today that will tell you otherwise, but the Word of God says clearly that the godly will suffer persecution. This is seen in the life of David. He went from the heights of the hero who had killed his ten thousands, to being completely destitute and on the run for his life.

David ran immediately to the house of God where he met Ahimelech, the Priest. Ahimelech questioned David and he manipulated the priest into helping him which would later result in the death of his family (see I Samuel 22:22). But God was faithful unto David and provided for him in every way. David and his men needed sustenance and all that was available was the showbread. This was given to David along with the sword of Goliath as a weapon for his protection. Jesus approved the action of giving the showbread in Matthew 12:3-8 and used it to admonish the Pharisees that He will have mercy rather than sacrifice.

There will be times in our life when we will be up high on the mountaintop, and other times we will be at our lowest place in the valley. Whether you are physically destitute as David and his men, or spiritually destitute; the answer is in Jesus Christ. Only He can satisfy your soul and supply every need. During your times of persecution, may you endure to the end and remain faithful for He is faithful to you.

REFLECTION: “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
