The Law of Christ
"Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ;' Galatians 6:1, 2.
I have long contended that if I were a business owner trying to hire people to fill positions, I would have the following question on my application: "Do you have a committed relationship with Jesus Christ?" The answer to this question would tell me volumes about the applicant. If the answer to my question is yes, I would know how this person would respond to the temptation to pilfer company property. I would know whether I could trust this person to be truthful, even when it cost him. If this person makes a promise, I know he will make every reasonable effort to honor that commitment. When this person is representing my company, I am confident that my company and I would not regret it.
To what do I owe my confidence in this imaginary person? Is there some lengthy list of rules he has signed? Is there a financial consideration that guarantees his performance? The answer is none of the above. I know that because he has disclosed his relationship with the Lord, he is bound by amuchmore powerful motivationbecause the obligation that binds him is the Law of Christ. He knows that Jesus is the silent listener of every conversation, the invisible observer of every action. He understands that sin is first vertical before it is horizontal, this sin is against God before it is against man. He cannot bear the thought of betraying the Lord.
Paul reminded the Galatians that all Christian compassion and character may be summed up by this unwritten law of Christ. Those who struggle with sin in the church are to encounter the love of Christ and expect fellow-believers to assist, not assassinate.
