The Song of David
“The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue,” 2 Samuel 23:2.
I love reading through the book of Psalms. The words are full of worship and praise to God the Father, most of which are written by David himself. Some of the hymns and praise songs we sing today are these psalms of David set to music. Second Samuel 23:1 says that these are the last words of David. This is probably the last psalm or song he wrote and gave to the chief musician.
We know that the Word of God is written by the inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16), and the psalms of David are no different. In 1 Samuel 16:13, the Spirit of the Lord came upon David when he was anointed by Samuel to be king. David made sure to tell us again in 2 Samuel 23:2, 3 that these were the words of God. He sang of rulers and how they should rule in fear of the Lord as he had done. He praised God for His everlasting covenant with David. He contrasted this in the next few lines with attributes of worthless rulers. As his final parting song before his death, he made sure to give future kings and rulers the key to ultimate leadership—the fear of the Lord. As we know from Scripture, David is the last king of Israel who spent his entire reign in the fear of the Lord. Other kings would have periods of obedience, but there would not be another who was as just and consistent a ruler of Israel as David until Jesus returns and rules in Jerusalem for one thousand years.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Is Jesus the King of your life? He is the perfect King: just and loving. Sing to the Lord today. Sing of His endless love and mercy.
