The Deliverance Sought by David

“In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me,” Psalm 31:1, 2.

A lot of people these days suffer from drug and alcohol abuse, but it may not be drugs or alcohol from which you need deliverance. Oftentimes people get convicted of their sin and pledge to stop whatever it is that plagues their lives but find that they fall back into the same old behavior. In one way or another, we all have something from which we need to be delivered because we all have a sin problem.

In this psalm, we see that the only real solution is to be delivered in the Lord’s righteousness (verse 1). We need the Lord to be our strong rock and defense because that is the only thing that can truly save us and keep us from falling (verse 2). We see that David says, “Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength” (verse 4). Satan is always trying to set a trap for us and pull us back into sin or destroy our testimony in Christ: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). The Lord gives us a formula to be delivered from Satan’s devices, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). God wants to deliver us and restore us, but we must first turn to Him for help and not just try to take care of it ourselves.

JUST A THOUGHT
“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you” (1 Peter 5:10).
