The Ruler over This Kingdom
“For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth. He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet,” Psalm 47:2, 3.
History is filled with kings conquering different lands in their quests to be kings over all the land and to be the most powerful, sovereign rulers. Whether the pharaohs of Egypt, the caesars of Greece or the kings of the different empires that ruled the known world of the time, they still never ruled the whole earth. No king or ruler will ever truly rule over the whole earth except for the Lord Jesus Christ when He comes back and subdues the people and nations of the earth (verse 2, 3).
When we begin to understand that God is truly in control, it causes us to praise him: “For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding” (Psalms 47:7). Though we sometimes grow tired of waiting for the Lord Jesus to come back, He will show who He is when He comes: “Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” (1 Timothy 6:15). When He comes, He will also bring all of the nations in line with His righteous rule even if He has to use a heavy hand with them: “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” (Revelation 19:15). Understanding who the Lord is and what He will do when He comes back should cause us to get excited for His return and give us a reverential fear of His authority and power over our lives.
REFLECTION
The Lord is the true King over this world, but do you live like He is the King over your life?
