The Idol Dagon Falls Before the Ark

“And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again. And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him,” (1 Samuel 5:3-4).

I once worked with a man that told me that he believed that he could believe what I believed and believe what all the other religions in the world believed at the same time. I told him that was impossible because I believed in what the Bible says and that if he believed the Bible, he could not believe all the other religions in the world also. He did not understand how I could make such a claim because he had never read the Bible and did not know my God.

One of the basic things to understand about God is that He does not want us to put any other gods before him (Exodus 20:3). God does not recognize any other gods (Isaiah 44:8) and does not like it when we make and worship idols in our lives. God tells us in His word “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God, (Exodus 34:14). We see that the idol Dagon fell before the Ark of the Lord, and that is symbolic of all other gods and idols that are placed before the Lord; they all will fall.

REFLECTION: What have you brought into your life that has been put in front of God? What will have to happen to your idol to show you that God wants to be first in your life?
