Faithful Young Timothy

“And so were the churches established in the faith,
and increased in number daily,” Acts 16:5.

We often use the phrase that something “increased exponentially” to describe rapid and large increase in a thing. It starts slow but can build quickly. To illustrate the point, there is a anecdote called the magic penny, in which a penny doubled daily for 30 days becomes a million dollars. I have not checked that math, but the point is made.
Can you imagine what would happen in our churches if disciples doubled like that? Even if we each made one disciple a year, the result would be astounding! Yet entire churches go a year without seeing a single soul saved. How sad is that?
In our Bible passage, we see the call of young Timothy to the gospel ministry. This young man was a believer and seemingly well thought of in the local church. As one with both a Jewish and Gentile background, Timothy was potentially quite an asset. God called Timothy (by way of Paul) and Timothy answered. Paul, Silas and Timothy hit the road, and churches were formed and added to daily. Who knows how many came to a saving faith because Timothy was faithful to God’s call? Paul was faithful also as he followed Jesus’ call to make disciples. He was so diligent in this that we still say Paul was Timothy’s father in the faith.
You may not be called to preach the gospel, but you are called for something, even if only to pray for others. On the other hand, we all share one call, and that is to share Jesus with the lost. Imagine how the world could be changed if you were faithful in answering that every day. How many sons in the faith have you begotten?

JUST A THOUGHT: If we all answered God’s call to reach out to the lost, we could turn the world upside down just like the disciples did.
