Caesarea to Sidon
“And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band. And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us,” Acts 27:1, 2.
Late in his career, when the Yankees were comfortably ahead in the pennant race, Joe DiMaggio was asked why he continued to play so hard. He said, “Because there might be somebody out there who has never seen me play.”
I can only imagine the thoughts of discouragement and doubt that filled Paul’s mind as he was imprisoned for his obedience to Christ. Every time Paul was on trial or imprisoned, he faithfully preached the gospel to those who would listen. Can you imagine asking Paul “why did you continue to preach the gospel even when you were being persecuted”? Paul would probably respond with something like, “There might be somebody out there who has never heard the gospel.”
When we arrive in Heaven, we will have the joy of fellowshipping with Paul and asking him about his trials and how God helped him through them. I am sure we will have the chance to hear Paul tell some details of his trials and victories that are not recorded in Scripture. Surely, Paul will testify to us about those who were saved simply because he was obedient to God.
I also imagine we will have the joy of meeting many who Paul led to Christ while he was imprisoned or under heavy persecution. What a joy it will be to hear their testimonies of how they heard the gospel and responded to Christ in faith all because Paul obeyed Christ and trusted Him to bring him through every trial.
THOUGHT: Every Christian should live every day considering the fact that they may encounter someone who has never heard the gospel.
