God’s Greatness and Goodness

“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works,” Psalm 145:3-5.

Here the psalmist proclaims the incomprehensible greatness of our God, inviting us to reflect on the boundless majesty that defines His character. The psalmist opened with a declaration of God’s greatness, emphasizing not only the magnitude but the immeasurability of His being. The term “unsearchable” (verse 3) reminds us that God’s vastness surpasses human understanding; His greatness is beyond the reach of our finite minds.

The psalmist continues by encouraging a multigenerational testimony of God’s mighty acts. In this passage, we find a call to bear witness to God’s greatness, passing down the narrative of His faithfulness from one generation to the next. This is not a mere recounting of history; it is an active participation in the ongoing story of God’s wondrous works. As we faithfully serve God, we will personally experience His power and greatness. David calls us to faithfully tell the story of how God works in our lives to every generation.

As we contemplate these verses, let us be inspired to join the chorus of praise that spans across generations. God’s greatness is not confined to the pages of ancient Scripture but is a living reality in our lives today. We are called to speak of His majesty, not only in grandeur, but also in the details of His wondrous works within our personal stories. May this psalm be a catalyst for a deeper understanding of the unsearchable greatness of our Lord.
