The Sweet Joy of Worship

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133:1.

Though the reason and time of this psalm is unknown, it brings out an important truth. Church service should be counted as a blessing. Even though it is not about the individual, the individual is blessed by coming together with others to worship the Lord.

When you come together with other brothers and sisters to focus on the Lord in song, praise and the hearing of the Word, you are putting your differences aside. You agree together that in the Lord you have something in common, and this commonality should be expressed.

Coming together to worship back in Bible times was different than it is now. First, communities were close knit, and second, transportation was by foot, so people were together before they even got to the Temple. They certainly had time to see the diversity in personality, character and disposition. Yet, their diversities did not keep them from worshiping together.

It is not uncommon to see church members only for services because of the way they live today and the transportation that is available. Furthermore, one will let diverse personalities be a reason for not attending. This psalm is a reminder of why worshiping together is a blessing.

“Behold” (verse 1) means to pay attention. It is a good idea for brethren to dwell together. “Good” gives the meaning of how beautiful it is or to be pleasing. It is also pleasant. It is delightful or sweet for you to come together. The psalmist uses the word “dwell.” This gives the connotation to sit down together, to stay or remain. The people spent much more time together then than people do today.

Certainly, as a child of God you should find it good and pleasing to be with the brethren. The differences of opinions or the diverse personalities that are seen make it that much better when you can come together in unity.
