A Good Work
“Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her,”
Mark 14:9.
“Keep your eyes on the prize.” We have all heard that. It means focusing on the important stuff and not getting distracted by the unimportant stuff. Paul, in his writings, used this type of comparison often as a way of teaching his readers to stay focused on the future reward rather than the current, earthly one. That is actually the application in a nutshell. When our emphasis seems to be on some pressing thing in our lives here, our ultimate focus should always be on the impact of that thing on our spiritual future.
In our devotional text, a young lady identified as Mary in other gospels poured some very expensive spikenard ointment on Jesus’ head. At this, some immediately started grumbling about what a waste of money it was because it could have been sold and the money then used for the poor. Jesus quickly defended her and her actions. He pointed out that they could (and should) always help the poor, but they did not have much time left to show their love for Him.
It is never wrong to give our best to Jesus. In fact, it is always right to give our best to Him. Yet, we often only give the leftovers of our lives to Him. What we focus on matters. As the Bible teaches, this earth is not your home, but Heaven is. What you do here matters there. Jesus said we would remember the woman in the story forever. In time to come, people would speak of her great love for her Lord. For what will you be remembered? I hope it will be that you loved Jesus.
JUST A THOUGHT: Jesus gave us His best and His all. It seems giving our best in return is not that much to ask.
