Is It Lawful?
“And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again,” Mark 10:1.
In corporate America, it is very common for those running big companies to send an inspirational email first thing every morning. Daily Leadership Tips, Morning Word of Wisdom, and such things are what they are often called. These men and women write these things, and those of us down the food chain tend to read them. What is the point? Well, the point is that those who lead us must have something to share, their position high up the echelon of power usually means they at least had enough wisdom to get there, and sharing it with others is a good thing.
Jesus had words of wisdom. The truth is, His words were perfect every single time. Jesus loved to teach, and people loved to listen. Our devotional passage is Jesus teaching on divorce and remarriage. It is a great teaching that we should all take to heart. It is the foundation of what we believe about marriage. Like most teachings, there is more to it than that. There is also an overriding spiritual lesson here that applies to all of life, and not just marriage.
When asked about the lawfulness of divorce, Jesus was quick to point out that this aberration of God’s plan was done due to the hardness of men’s hearts. It seems they were going to divorce their wives, and the creation of a writ of divorce provided some protection to the parties involved, particularly the women. That was not God’s plan. His plan was that marriage was to last for a lifetime. The lesson here applies to all of life. The problem is, there is a way men do things and a way God desires things. Which will you choose?
JUST A THOUGHT: The ways of men lead to trouble and strife, but the ways of God lead to joy and fulfillment.
