A Great Victory

A dear friend of mine came to me for comfort. My heart broke for hers as she told me about many things in her life. She finally looked at me as a tear rolled down her cheek and said, “I’ve lost so much.”

Later that day, I came to this passage in 2 Samuel 23 which recounts the great victories given by God to David’s warriors. In that record, there is a guy by the name of Shammah whose name in the Hebrew means loss. When the rest of the Israelite army had given up and retreated, this man named Shammah, stood in the middle of a measly section of the field where beans were being grown to feed his people. He held his ground there against the onslaught of ungodliness and defended the little that God had entrusted to him with all his might. Much of the country was already desolate, having been plundered by the horde surrounding this lonely, godly man. This man, Shammah had already suffered much loss but here, on that day, those beans were defended against loss. The Scripture records for us that the Lord gave them a great victory.

Are you going through a loss? There is One who understands and cares (1 Peter 5:7). In Jesus there is victory. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

REFLECTION: Are you reeling from losses in your life? Do you need to stand up for Christ and defend what is left so that God can bring you a great victory?
