Adam’s Sin

There is a famous quote that says, “God wants for us what we would want for ourselves if we only had the sense to want it.” That is not exactly what our devotional verse says, but it rather captures the sentiment.

God had placed Adam and Eve in a perfect place. Their every need was met, and all they had to do was commune personally with God and enjoy His blessings. There was only one restriction, and that was to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They did not sin because they were totally innocent and did not even know what sin was. God had not denied them the fruit of that tree because it was wonderful. He denied them that fruit because He knew what it would do to them. In this case, knowledge was not power because in this case knowledge was death.

We all know what happened. Satan convinced the pair that they were somehow losing out over being denied the fruit of that tree, and they willingly ate it. Before, they did not sin because they had no knowledge of it. Now, they possessed a knowledge of both good and evil. God always had this knowledge but being God He was not susceptible to partake in evil. We imperfect humans are not that way. At that moment of knowledge, we became prisoners of sin and glad partakers in it. Sin never occurs in a vacuum and the effects spread far and wide. In this case, the effect was the spread of a sin nature to all humanity, and the subsequent need for salvation from it. Thank Him that He has made that salvation available to us.

JUST A THOUGHT: God was not caught by surprise in the Garden of Eden; He knew what was coming and already had a plan in place to fix it.
