David’s Witness About God
“I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O Lord, will I sing.” Psalm 101:1.
For the most part, people follow some leader. Some folks make boastful claims to be independent or free thinkers, but if you dig around, you find that they are following the lead of some other independent free thinker. One folk singer even wrote a song about it entitled “Gotta Serve Somebody.” Ultimately, we are all inspired by or submit to someone else. The thing is, the examples and people we choose to follow can be good, or they can be harmful. Did you know the same thing is true of those you choose as spiritual leaders? They can also be good or bad examples and leaders.
Here, King David is singing to the Lord about the kind of earthly king he wants to be. The role of the king in spiritual matters was significant in those days. Generally, history shows that godly kings had godly subjects and vice versa. Here, David is laying out for all to hear the example of faithfulness the leaders of the nations should set and the standard of faithfulness to God that the people should meet. In our devotional verse, David sets the proper tone immediately. God is his number one, so to speak.
What about you? Who do you follow spiritually? I hope your first answer is Jesus. But what earthly spiritual leader do you follow? Do they sing to the Lord or pretend to do that while pursuing their own selfish agendas? Do they even follow Jesus, or have they cloaked themselves in a wrap of Christianity? Finally, remember that not only do we all follow someone, we all lead someone, too. What kind of leader are you? Do you lead people in a direction that accomplishes God’s plan or fulfills your needs, desires and goals?
JUST A THOUGHT
As a spiritual leader, whose goals are you trying to meet, yours or God’s?
