David’s Triumph
“I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O Lord; for it is good. For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies,” Psalm 54:6, 7.
In my secular work life, there was a time when I was trying to advance to the position of supervisor. My location manager sat me down and proceeded to tell me that I deserved to be promoted but that I needed to be more social with the management and spend time with them at their parties. I told him that if that is what it took for me to advance then I would not advance. Soon after that, he was given a drug test and sent to rehab by the company executives and lost his position because he would not stay off of the drugs. A new manager was installed, and he immediately promoted me. I thanked God for allowing me to advance without compromising myself or my values.
Even when things do not seem to go your way at first, you can still praise God for who He is and for His goodness (verse 6). Sometimes you may think that you have to become like the world in order to succeed or give in to what the enemy says or wants, but God’s Word says, “Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long” (Proverbs 23:17). You may not even know what or who you are really fighting against in your life. That is why we need the Lord to fight for us every day: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12).
REFLECTION
You can triumph because “it is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22, 23).
