Asaph’s Command

“Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth,” Psalm 78:1.

When I was in the Army during basic training, the drill sergeants would preface most instructions with a loud and thunderous “Listen up.” Of course, that was usually followed by other descriptive words. But still, the point was made. When we address others, getting their attention is usually a good idea. If what we are about to say is extremely important, getting attention in an upfront, even firm way is a good idea. Preachers do that a lot as they deliver God’s Word to us. They have the right, since they share God’s Word.

Throughout God’s Word, God Himself or others speaking at His command use phrases to get our attention and compel us to listen. Today, God still speaks to us, not audibly, of course, but in His Bible or by way of those who preach and teach the Bible to us. He also speaks to us individually in ways we do not always understand, but speak He does. Are you listening? Do you read and study your Bible to hear God’s instructions? Are you open to the words said by those called to teach you? Even more importantly, we must ask ourselves if we just hear the words and move on as if God said nothing. You must listen, understand and act on what God told you. To ignore God’s voice because you are not listening and do nothing is disobedience. God has not changed. This universe and everything in it are His to direct as He pleases. What do you do when God speaks? Do you listen to Him or ignore Him? When you look in the mirror of God’s Word, do you fix what it shows you or move on as if nothing is amiss?

JUST A THOUGHT
God never has any empty word. When He speaks, He expects us to listen and act on His words.
