Our Mediator
Some nicknames fit. I know a man who lost his right arm, and his nickname is Lefty. Another man I know is about six foot three inches tall, and his nickname is Shorty. Another man I know has the nickname, Rat, and I almost laughed out loud in church when someone called on Brother Rat to pray.
It might not be appropriate to call the many descriptive titles of Jesus nicknames, but they all say something important about Him. Many of them relate to how He accomplished salvation by His death on the cross. Jesus is your Advocate (1 John 2:1) who pleads your case before God basing His plea for your forgiveness on Himself. Jesus is your propitiation (verse 2) referring to His satisfying God’s righteous requirements for your sins. Jesus is your Redeemer (Job 19:25) having paid for your sins. Jesus is the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2) having written salvation through his death on the cross and finished it by rising again the third day. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6), and there is no salvation except through Him.
Jesus is also called Mediator in the reading today. He is your go-between or arbitrator. Two parties might agree to meet before an arbitrator to settle a dispute. Because your sins separated you from God and made you an enemy with God, Jesus arbitrates or mediates between you and God. What enables Him to arbitrate between you and God is what 1 Timothy 2:6 says. Jesus is your ransom, the payment necessary for your forgiveness.
Thought: Everything about Jesus says Savior.
