Saul’s Inquiring About David

“And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite,” I Samuel 17:58.

God’s perspective and man’s perspective are as different as night and day. The world respects the proud while the Lord gives grace to the humble. The world uplifts the rich and powerful, but there is no respecter of persons with God. While the world looks on outward appearances, God looks deep into the heart of man. Our Lord uses whom He will in order to carry out His plans whether young or old, rich or poor. He only needs a willing servant.

David was such a servant for the Lord. He had done what no other Israelite had the courage or fortitude to do. Saul had witnessed this young boy kill the giant that had taunted and terrified them night and day for forty days. David was not experienced in war and battle. He was not a mighty man full of great swelling words that instilled fear into his enemies. He did not have sizeable wealth to pay for others to protect him. He was a young, lowly shepherd boy who had great faith in the Lord. King Saul took notice of this mighty act and inquired of him. God had exalted David in the eyes of the king.

So many seek to be rich and famous and make a name for themselves in the world today. This may bring an earthly reward and pleasure in the flesh, but God cannot use you for His glory while you seek to honor yourself. Seek to honor God and those things that please Him. Do not worry about your age, position or rank in life. The Lord can use you no matter what! Give Him your whole heart and be a willing servant for Him.

REFLECTION: “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (I Timothy 4:12).
