The Cruelty of the Godless
“He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil,” Psalm 36:4.
Are you a morning thinker or a night thinker? In other words, do you plan your day first thing in the morning, or do you get everything laid out and ordered the night before? I like to think of myself as a night planner, but sometimes I am just too tired. Mornings normally do not work because I am in a hurry or something does not go right. Nonetheless, we are all either thinking about the day ahead or the day behind while lying in bed.
David spoke of this planning that takes place in the heart of the wicked while they are still in bed. The wicked person devises mischief there. Most of us would like to think that we are thinking good thoughts and planning godly things while we lie in bed. Maybe we try to pray, or maybe we talk with our spouses. But rather we have invited something into our beds that has the potential of bringing great mischief to us—our phones.
Maybe we answer email or texts. Maybe we check the latest on social media. Or maybe, just maybe, we allow wickedness and mischief and sin into our beds, and more importantly, into our hearts, as we scroll and scroll. We have allowed it to keep us up at night, feeding us an endless stream of both good and bad. The modern phone is a powerful tool, but it can also be a powerful enemy. If you find yourself in bad company because of it, put it down before you go to be and do not let it have that power to destroy. The cell phone has incredible power for you and in you. It can be a cruel, godless master. Do not allow it to be the discipling influence in your life.
PRAYER
“Father, help us to love You more and put You first in our lives before anything else. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
