David’s Dependence and Delight
“Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my rock; be not silent to me: lest if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit,” Psalm 28:1.
Dependency is a critical issue in the world today. Human beings have a profound void within their souls that can only be filled by God. Yet, so many do not recognize it, and they look for every other worldly pleasure to satisfy the longing in their souls. Moses, however, understood his utter dependency on God. When the Lord said He would not go up with him and the Israelites to the Promised Land due to their sin, Moses protested. “And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence” (Exodus 33:15). Moses understood his desperate need for God’s presence and grace to be with them on their journey.
David also understood his dire need for the presence of God in his life. He knew without God’s grace and mercy, he would be no different than the wicked that did not know the Lord. David recognized his position before Almighty God, “Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy” (Psalm 86:1). He was a king, yet he humbled himself before the King of kings and delighted in Him.
When you bow down to pray, take time to recognize your position before the Lord. David had the proper perspective that he was but flesh, poor and needy. Apart from Christ, we are completely without hope. We need Him desperately, more than the air we breathe. He is our strength, He is our righteousness, He is our peace, and He is our life. The more you learn to lean upon the Lord for everything, the more you learn to delight yourself in Him. Therein will you have real satisfaction and joy.
REFLECTION
Do you feel a void in your life? Humble yourself before God and cry out to the only One who can fill it.
