Daily Devotional for Saturday, May 20
“And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land,” Acts 27:44.
I promise. We say those two words a lot. We add to a commitment to do something by adding the words, I promise, as if that makes our commitment firmer. When we have failed, we say, “But this time I promise!” I suppose we think that means that, this time, we will honor what we said. Those two words have lots of meaning, but at the same time they have little meaning at all. They should mean everything, but as sinful and fallen humans, we usually manage to blow it.
The travails for Paul, his guards, the prisoners and others on the ship continued. They ultimately ran aground and abandoned ship. Everybody grabbed what flotation devices they could and made it safely to shore. Just as God had inspired Paul to tell the others, no one on the ship died.
We get promises from God all of the time. At least, if we spend time in God’s Word we get them. The Bible is packed with the things God has promised to those who believe. It even has promises to those who do not believe. That promise is the promise of salvation if they do believe. God promises salvation, provision, protection and many other things. If we read the Bible with diligence not only will we see that God makes promises, we will see that He fulfills every single one of them.
God makes these same promises to you as well. God will keep His promises. There is something else for you to note as well. Paul and his friends did not arrive at the fulfillment of God’s promise without trouble along the way. Even though God will always come through, the trip may not be trouble free for you either.
THOUGHT: Because God sees the end from the beginning, when He makes a promise, it has already happened.
