Leave the Gleanings

“God rarely gives us things to hold. Rather, He gives us things to share”- Unknown

From the earliest commands of God, He has made provision for those who cannot fully provide for themselves. Generosity is the very nature of God. He gave sacrificially to undeserving sinners so that we could enjoy an eternal relationship with Him. However, our sinful nature causes us to selfishly grasp tightly to our earthly possessions at times.

The human lineage of Christ was sustained by obedience to this command in Scripture. Generations after this passage was inspired by God, Ruth was able to provide for herself and her mother-in-law, Naomi, through the generous and obedient acts of Boaz. God’s principles of generosity provided for two dear women who had very little and allowed Boaz the opportunity to find a wife.

Scripture tells us in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.” God instructs us not to enable the lazy who are able to work. Yet, the very nature of God guides us to be cheerfully generous to those who have needs among us. When we give generously and share graciously, we are expressing the very nature of God who gave so generously to us. “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again” (Luke 6:38).

REFLECTION: Do you find yourself selfishly hoarding your possessions or generously sharing of what God has provided for you?
