Blessings for Those Who Fear the Lord
“Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments,” Psalm 112:1.
We used to sing a song with children in Vacation Bible School named “Praise Ye the Lord, Hallelujah.” When we did it, the girls always sang the “Hallelujah” part, and the boys always sang the “Praise Ye the Lord” part. They would stand and sit as they sang their parts. It took some practice to get it right. The children always liked it, and we had fun. Another thing is that children, in their absolute simplicity, seemed to understand that praising the Lord is something to be happy about.
God is our Father, and we are His children. In many ways, our relationship with Him ought to be childlike. Jesus Himself told us that those who come to Him have to come as little children. He even used a real child to illustrate the point to His listeners. But children grow up, and eventually, they become serious adults. There is nothing wrong with being serious; God also tells us several times to be sober-minded. How can we reconcile all of this? Well, guess what? God also tells us to be filled with joy.
In our psalm for today, we see that the Lord blesses those who delight in His commandments. He blesses those who fear Him. I like the word “delighteth” (verse 1). In the Hebrew, it can mean to desire, delight in, be pleased with, have pleasure. It can also indicate those who do it are soft, tender and teachable. Is that not just like children? Our problem is that we grow up and become self-reliant. What about you? Do you live as if you have it under control and do not need your Father? Or do you act like His child and delight in that?
JUST A THOUGHT
If you worship like you are suffering a trial, you should rethink what worship means.
