Our True Source of Strength

Many Christians have uttered the phrase, “God will never put on you more than you can handle.” If this were true, we would have no need to trust God or to seek Him as our help and shield. King David certainly faced more than he could handle in his lifetime. In this narrative, the great warrior king declares his utter dependence upon God because, “There is no king saved by multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength” (verse 16).

As we navigate the journey of life, we may find success in our personal pursuits. We may even find joy in these pursuits (relationships, achievements, careers and so forth). Yet, our rejoicing and our hope in these pursuits will be short lived. Around the corner from every success is a trial or a pitfall. If we are trusting in our successes or our achievements, we will have nothing to cling to in times of disappointment.

David declared “For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name” (verse 21). In all of David’s victories and successes, his heart declares that his greatest rejoicing is from trusting in the name and person of God. In every success we enjoy, trust God. In every disappointment we face, trust God.

Few kings in human history knew military success like King David. His conquests reached far and wide during his reign. Yet, with all the great military might of Israel, David declared that his only hope was in the Almighty God.

REFLECTION: Are you trusting in your own abilities and successes or are you fully trusting in God and God alone?
