The Lord’s Mercy to His People
“Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea. Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known,” Psalm 106:7, 8.
As with many other psalms, this one starts with a proclamation to praise the Lord because of His goodness and mercy. The theme in this psalm is that His people had forgotten all the Lord had done for them.
A phrase that is popular among children is “I forgot.” When asked why they did not clean their rooms or do a particular chore, that is the answer. Even though they may honestly forget that forgetfulness stems from a self-preoccupation. Children need a constant reminder of their responsibilities, hoping with maturity they will grow out of the forgetfulness age. When adults use this excuse, often, they are viewed as childish and irresponsible. Yet, that is exactly what the children of Israel were. They were so occupied with their own desires and wants that soon after the Lord rescued them, they forgot His mercy and His power.
To be merciful is doing something kind for someone who does not deserve it. Everyone wants mercy but not everyone wants to show mercy. This is not true with the Lord. Time and time again He forgave Israel. He delivered them and helped them. The Lord loved Israel, He had mercy because of His promises.
The Lord sent His Son to die for the world, showing mercy to all (Ephesians 2:4, 5). We do not deserve His mercy; yet, He gives it because He loves us. There have been times when the Lord has been good to you and has helped you. There have been times you have seen His power. Do not be as a child and forget all He has done.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Give praise to the Lord for His mercy and love.
The more you give thanks the less forgetful you will be.
