The Description of Those Who Exalt

“Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he answered them. He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them. Thou answeredst them, O Lord our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions,” Psalm 99:6-8.

Our passage paints a vivid picture of those who exalt the Lord, revealing characteristics that mark the lives of those who seek to honor God in all things. The first characteristic of those who exalt God is that they called upon His name. The mention of Moses, Aaron and Samuel emphasized their intimate and personal relationship with the Lord. They did not merely utter His name; they called upon Him with sincerity, recognizing their need for His guidance and strength.

It is evident these individuals were not passive in their faith. They actively sought God through obedience. The cloudy pillar, a symbol of God’s presence, signifies that God spoke to them. Their hearts were tuned to His voice, and they responded by keeping His testimonies and ordinances. Exalting God involves a commitment to living in accordance with His Word, aligning our lives with His principles.

The passage reveals that God answered their prayers. Exalting God is not a one-sided endeavor; it involves a relationship where communication flows both ways. The Lord responds to those who earnestly seek Him.

The passage also acknowledges the forgiveness of God. Despite human failures and the consequences of their sins, God forgave. Those who exalt God understand His mercy and forgiveness. It is a reminder that our God is not only holy and just but also compassionate and forgiving.

REMINDER
May we call upon the name of the Lord with sincerity, seek His guidance through obedience, listen for His voice and live in the assurance of His forgiveness.
