Casting Down Imaginations

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;),” 2 Corinthians 10:3, 4.

From the beginning of time men have fought with themselves and among themselves. It did not take long for the first sin to be carried out, nor for the first murder to take place. Men throughout the ages have denied they are sinners and instead continue to compare themselves with others so they do not look so bad.

When the Scriptures say we do not fight against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12), and the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, it is true. The fight is against how God wants us to be. In this Scripture reading, Paul is putting forth his apostolic authority because there were those who had an attitude of “Who are you to tell us what to do and how to behave?” In verse 10, they were also comparing the fact that his looks did not match his letter writing. He wrote with such boldness and authority, but his physique must have appeared weak.

The church at Corinth was consumed with the outward appearance, and when a person is preoccupied with the appearance of others, they are judging. This fight that you are in is a fight to allow your thoughts to align with the Word of God. “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:30, 31).A person wars daily with pride. Pride that says, “I am fine,” or “At least I am not like that person.”

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: Comparing yourself with others is easy and natural. Remember the Word of God so that you will love instead of judge.
