Daily Devotional for Sunday April 23

Witnesses to the World

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth,” Acts 1:8.

Almost every organization has what is called a mission statement. This is usually a fairly short statement that wraps up the focus and purpose of an organization. Sometimes they are just fluff and have no real meaning to the people in an organization. Sometimes they completely define an organization. By always looking towards their mission statements, some companies have transformed the business sector they are part of and taken success to whole new levels.
I certainly do not mean to sound trite here, but we have a mission statement as Christians. We see it clearly in what we call the Great Commission. We see it in our devotional verse as well. It is quite simple. Our purpose as Christians is to be witnesses to the entire world. That includes everyone from our next-door neighbor to the family in a desert on the other side of the planet. While we do many other things such as teaching, charity work and even political involvement, our real mission is described in the above statement. If all the other things do not support that mission, then we should question whether they are legitimate activities in our churches.
That is true in your life as well. You may be doing many things that you think are relevant to your Christian life. Each of us needs to consider what the purposes are of those things. Are they for attaining the goal of seeing souls saved? Then continue. If they are not, then pray that your life might be redirected so that they are.

THOUGHT: Any Christian who claims to not know what his purpose in life is has not paid attention. We all share the common purpose of witnessing to the lost.
