The Pardon and the Purchase

“And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people,” 2 Samuel 24:21.

David showed time and time again that when he committed sin, he repented and turned to God. We plainly see in this that God uses all things for His honor and glory.

As David saw what was happening to his people (his flock), he begged the Lord to spare them, taking the blame and requesting the punishment be on him. The Lord, in His mercy, stopped the angel from continuing to destroy Jerusalem and commanded David to buy the land where the angel stood. David followed God’s orders and went to Araunah to purchase his land. Being a humble man, Araunah wanted to give David the land for free, but David refused saying, “Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing” (verse 24).

This just seems like another story in the Bible until you realize what God was using this moment to accomplish. The land David bought was likely the same land where Abraham went to offer up Isaac as a sacrifice. This was also the same land Solomon would use to build the original Temple. Furthermore, this was likely the same area where Christ was crucified, paying the ultimate sacrifice for all mankind! He works all things for our good! God was clearly painting the picture that sin has a cost and that He will pay it and provide a way for us to be forgiven and sanctified from all unrighteousness.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
We do not deserve the immeasurable grace and mercy of our Savior. He loved us so much that He was willing to pay our sin debt so that we could live!
