Scriptural Qualifications of Deacons

“Deacons are like a congregation’s Special Ops force, carrying out unseen assignments with fortitude and joy.”- Deacons by Matt Smethurst

To help lead a growing church, the early Apostles led the church at Jerusalem to appoint faithful men who were full of the Holy Ghost to be Deacons. These men were chosen because they were already serving faithfully and had shown spiritual maturity, wisdom and character. These men would be appointed by the church for the task of assisting the Pastors by relieving them of some of the physical duties of the church. This would enable the Pastors to give their full attention to studying the Word of God and seeking the face of God through Prayer.

The office of Deacon is not to be treated as a “good ‘ol boys” club to give favor to certain men of the church. It is not to be a reward to those who have curried favor with the Pastor or with other church members. The office of Deacon is a weighty responsibility only to be entrusted to the most faithful and humble men who will give their lives to work for the health and strength of the local church.

Many Pastors and churches have been made better because of godly men who understood their Biblical role as Deacons. These are men who give their all to lift the burden of ministry with their Pastor and to support the physical needs of their local church. Many Pastors can testify that there is no greater blessing than having good and godly Deacons by their side in the ministry trenches.

Just A Thought: The man who humbly serves the church as Deacon is a great treasure to any Pastor and church.
