The Triumphs of the Four
“And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant. And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimeah the brother of David slew him,” 2 Samuel 21:20, 21.
Is there a fear that you have overcome in your life? I do not care for heights. I have determined the safest place to be is on the ground. But once I reached adulthood, I had to face that fear for various reasons. I still have not fully conquered my fear of heights, but I can at least tolerate getting on a three-step stool, especially if someone is on both sides stabilizing it.
The Israelites were once again under attack by the Philistines. Some of these men were family members of the giant Goliath. At least three of them were his sons. If you remember Goliath, he was a big fellow. First Samuel 17:4 records for us Goliath of Gath was a man “whose height was six cubits and a span.” Modern measurement terms put his height somewhere above 9 1/2'. This man was a giant’s giant. The Bible does not describe the men in his family in as much detail, but undoubtedly, they were also big boys. Not only were some of their massive weapons described in this passage, but also one of Goliath’s sons was documented as having twenty-four fingers and toes. The Bible does not tell us why he had these extra features, but there is no doubt he was good-sized, too. I imagine you could look at any of Goliath’s relatives and see pretty easily that they were his kin. Would you be afraid to face them?
David had faced Goliath and defeated him. Now, four of David’s loyal men killed four of Goliath’s relatives. Because they were loyal to King David, these four men were not afraid to face Goliath’s people.
JUST A THOUGHT
Is there a giant standing in the way of your service to the King of kings, Jesus Christ?
