Eternal Covenant
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
A covenant is a promise, and the Lord does not break His promises. It may seem like it at times, and such was the case for Ethan the Ezrahite who wrote Psalm 89. Much of the Psalm recounts all of God’s greatness. In the end, Ethan the Ezrahite questions, “Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground” (verse 39).
The scoffers of 2 Peter question God’s promises, “Where is the promise of his coming?” (2 Peter 3:4). Maybe you have heard people mock the idea of Jesus coming again because it has been so long. They misunderstand by saying that everything has remained the same since creation. But they are willfully ignorant of the dramatic changes the flood of Genesis 6—9 had on God’s creation (2 Peter 3:5, 6). They are also willfully ignorant of the coming changes of God’s fiery judgment that will destroy this present earth (verses 7, 10).
Here is the truth: God keeps His promises, every last one of them to the most minute detail. Just because current events do not seem to line up with God’s promises in no way means that God is not being faithful to His promises. It only means that you just do not understand everything.
Thought: Trust God’s promises; not your own understanding of them.
