Boasting About the Future

“But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin, James 4:16, 17.

The story is told about a CEO of a Fortune 500 company who pulled into a service station to get gas. He went inside to pay, and when he came out he noticed his wife was talking with the service station attendant. She had dated the attendant before she met her husband.

The CEO got in the car, and the two drove in silence. He was feeling pretty good about himself when he finally spoke: “I bet I know what you were thinking. I bet you were thinking you are glad you married me, a Fortune 500 CEO, and not him, a service station attendant.”

“No, I was thinking if I had married him, he would be a Fortune 500 CEO and you would be a service station attendant.”

Pride can take on many forms in the heart of a believer—pride about personal achievements or pride which comes from comparing yourself to another. James illustrates the danger of pride in making plans without submitting to God. We could even be so prideful as to assume we will live long enough to accomplish all of our plans.

As the prideful CEO should recognize his success may not have come without the help of his wife, no Christian should ever presume he is owed any number of days to accomplish his plans. Humility toward God in our plans and in our success is a necessary trait for any child of God.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Be grateful for every day God gives you and seek Him first before making any plans.
