David’s Source and Song of Victory
“I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee,” Psalm 144:9.
Have you ever worked with a person who is a credit stealer? Sometimes, people are slick about it, and sometimes, they just outright claim credit for the work others have done. There are bosses that do that a lot. A subordinate does the work or comes up with the idea; yet, their supervisor presents it to their boss as if it were their own concept. There is always that co-worker who contributes nothing to a group project other than to be around for the pats on the back if the group is successful. Is that not irritating? How does it make you feel? Words like mad and disappointed come to mind.
What is ironic here is that most of us steal God’s credit all of the time. Things sometimes go well in our lives, and we strut around as if we have accomplished something. We overcome some difficult obstacles and strut around as if we are bad to the bone. When the kudos come in for having done something well, we are apt to just say thanks and take the pats on the back. How often do we forget to give credit to God for all He does for us?
In this psalm, David is making a very public display of thanks to God on behalf of the nation and on behalf of himself. There would have been no doubt in people’s minds as to who David considered the source of his and the nation’s success. If you thank God privately, He hears you, of course. But, if you thank Him publicly, the world hears you. Do you see God as the source of your success? If you say you do, can others see that in your life?
JUST A THOUGHT
Just remember, if God gave you skills, God can take them away also.
