That Blessed Hope
“Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ,” Titus 2:12, 13.
Verse 12 in the text gives reference to teaching. Teaching usually refers to a person. In this instance, teaching refers to something which is the grace of God. The first part of this chapter deals with some behaviors each believer should practice. God’s grace teaches you to do these things. God’s grace teaches you to be better in Christ. “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14).
If you are living in ungodliness, then you are not looking for that blessed hope and glorious appearing of Jesus. If you are striving to serve the Lord faithfully, you look forward to His coming. “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:2, 3).
God’s desire for you is to live apart from the world’s philosophy, ideals and beliefs which are ungodly. He wants to make you peculiar, which means of His own or special. You belong to God.
As the Bible states, you cannot do good of your own accord, but now by God’s grace, which is the working of the Holy Spirit in you, you can do the good that God has intended for you to do by His grace. His grace is the divine influence upon your heart. All good things are by God’s grace.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: Remember you were redeemed for better things than this world has to offer. Live in and through the grace of God that helps you daily to put on godliness.
