Save Me from Warring Hearts
“In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue,” Psalm 120:1, 2.
There is not a man who escapes distresses, troubles and afflictions. This psalm gives an excellent remedy when you are going through hard times. Cry to the Lord, tell Him your troubles, your fears and your heartaches because He will hear you. He will comfort you.
It is hard to be in this world as a follower of Christ. The people you may be around daily at work or school are a challenge. Amid hearing lies and other deceptive things, God has told you to hold your tongue. One thing God hates is a lying tongue. In fact, He hates it so much that it is named twice among the things that He hates in Proverbs 6:16-19.
The writer of this psalm was for peace. He sought peace, but everywhere he turned there was war. Israel fought many physical wars, but there were also spiritual wars. He was up against the opposition of evil men. Both kinds of wars can bring distress. It makes it worse though when you are up against those who lie. Lies cause confusion, which causes mental anguish. This is a lack of peace.
Today, the war you fight is spiritual. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places”(Ephesians 6:12). Jesus has told His children not to retaliate, and this is hard. He has left you an example. “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth” (1 Peter 2:21, 22).
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
When you feel distressed and overwhelmed by the actions of others, cry out to the Lord. You have the help of the Holy Spirit to not reciprocate. God will give you peace.
