The Final Victory

In 1988, Kirk Gibson crushed a two-run home run to win game one of the World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers would go on to beat the Oakland A’s in the World Series. Most sports fans remember the home run and Gibson’s limping victory run around the bases. Most Dodgers fans cannot help but celebrate the moment as if it were yesterday. As a Dodgers fan, I must admit to celebrating more past victories than current victories.

As Christians, we can read Scripture and celebrate the goodness of God and the victories He has won for His children and for His name. Time and time again, throughout Scripture we read of extraordinary victories over mighty armies and wicked leaders. However, Christians have even more victories to look forward to in the future than we have in the past. Most importantly, the final victory when God destroys all the forces of evil and locks up sin, Satan and death for all eternity. “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10).

Many sports fans hang our hats on past victories with little hope for future victories to celebrate. But God’s people have been promised an eternity of celebrating the great victor, Jesus Christ, and all that He has won for the glory of God. We look forward with great joy and hope for the day that death is swallowed up in victory and sin is forever conquered. Hallelujah!

REFLECTION: We may lose battles in this life, but the eternal war has already been won by our eternal Savior!
