Forgetting the Lord’s Works

“And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them,” Psalm 106:36.

There is a saying, “Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it.” And there is also this saying, “The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” I probably did not quote those correctly, but it makes the point, nonetheless. We need to remember our mistakes so that we stop committing them. On the other hand, we should not forget what went well. More than anything, we need to remember how God has blessed us so that we keep serving and honoring Him.

This psalm tells a tale of God’s unfailing love for His people despite their repeated rebellion and idolatry. The Israelites, even with constant reminders of God’s steadfastness, repeatedly went after other gods. It seemed they could never remember the past. Every sermon preached by Moses included a retelling of God’s great faithfulness. Paul, Peter and others reminded the people of God’s faithfulness when they preached. Yet, the people always seemed to forget. It is funny how we call on the Lord in times of distress and turn our backs on Him in times of bounty.

What about you? Do you know that even the fact that you are reading this is a gift from God? Do you know that all things in your life, big or small, are from your Heavenly Father? How do you react when life is good and gifts are bountiful? Do you turn with increased zeal for worship and service out of a thankful heart, or do you abandon God because you no longer need Him? “Look at all I have accomplished. What on earth do I need God for?” That is the refrain of many who have found success; it is ironic how quickly we forget where our success came from.

JUST A THOUGHT
History clearly shows that God is infinitely more steadfast towards us than we are to Him.
