Asaph’s History Lesson

“For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works. Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God. And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer,” Psalm 78:32-35.

“We will remember, we will remember We will remember the works of Your hands

We will stop and give you praise

For great is Thy faithfulness”—Tommy Walker

This chorus is a declaration that God’s people will remember and celebrate all that He has done and praise Him accordingly.

Asaph is recounting the history of Israel with God’s people and how they seem to cycle endlessly between obedience and rebellion. Generations passed who did not remember God’s faithfulness nor His commands, and they suffered greatly for it. Prior to our key verses, Asaph declares that he would faithfully declare the Word of God so that his generation would know Him.

Perhaps one of the most discouraging statements in all of Scripture is Judges 2:10, “And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.” Somehow, an entire generation who knew God failed to honor Him and to teach their children about Him. How can we, who have enjoyed the blessings of God, not declare Him to our children and grandchildren and everyone that we know?

FINAL THOUGHT
You and I must faithfully live for God and diligently declare His truths to the next generation, lest we leave no trace of our faith behind.
