The Futility of Sin

The song, Farther Along, points out that we often wonder why those around us doing evil seem to prosper, while those trying to live right seem beset by trials and tribulations. The song’s last verse and the chorus, give us an answer. Someday we will see Jesus coming in glory to reclaim us, and we will understand it all by and by. In the meantime, we wait.

That song seems applicable to the world around us today. Evil abounds and is even celebrated. Opposition is around every corner, and to speak against evil only brings stronger opposition. The writer of Ecclesiastes, Solomon, knew a bit about both good living and evil living. Greatly blessed materially by God when he only asked for wisdom, Solomon misused his great material blessings later in life and fell into great sin. Yet, we see in his writings that Solomon recognized that his worldly pleasures were nothing but vanity. In other words, they were useless. God inspired Solomon to write these things to us to teach us that lesson.

There is a TV preacher who often teaches us how to have, “our best life now.” That ought to be unnerving to any discerning reader of God’s Word. No matter how great our earthly blessings may be, they will never measure up to God’s Heaven. If we die without Jesus, this indeed will be our best life, as our eternal life will be nothing but emptiness and torment. For those who follow Jesus and suffer trials, the thought that this is the best life means this life is just empty. Yet, we understand that our eternal life will bring the joys we never saw in this one. Choices have consequences, and one choice is eternal. What is your choice today?

JUST A THOUGHT: Paul taught us to keep our eyes on the prize that awaits us.
