The Good Deeds of Jehoshaphat

“And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim,” 2 Chronicles 17:3.

Jehoshaphat served as king of Judah honorably as he committed to the ways of the Lord. Jehoshaphat’s reign was marked by a series of intentional actions aimed at strengthening the spiritual foundation of his kingdom.

First, Jehoshaphat demonstrated his dedication to the Lord by walking in the ways of his ancestor David and avoiding the idolatrous practices that had plagued previous kings. He sought God with all his heart, following His commandments, and he led his people in righteousness.

Next, Jehoshaphat invested in the spiritual education of his people by sending out teachers and Levites to instruct them in the Law of the Lord. He recognized the importance of equipping his subjects with the knowledge of God’s Word, understanding that a well-informed populace is essential for building a strong and prosperous nation.

Furthermore, Jehoshaphat took proactive measures to fortify the defenses of Judah, recognizing that spiritual strength must be accompanied by physical preparedness. He strengthened the cities of Judah and stationed troops throughout the land, ensuring the safety and security of his people.

During his reign, Judah experienced a time of peace and prosperity with neighboring nations paying tribute and acknowledging the power of the God of Israel. The example of Jehoshaphat challenges us to consider our own commitment to God and His ways. Are we actively seeking Him with all our hearts, obeying His commandments and leading others in righteousness? Are we investing in the spiritual growth and education of those around us, equipping them with the knowledge of God’s Word? Are we taking proactive steps to fortify our spiritual defenses, preparing ourselves for the challenges that may lie ahead?

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR TODAY

May the example of Jehoshaphat encourage us to pursue wholehearted devotion to the Lord, to invest in the spiritual well-being of others and to fortify our faith in God’s promises.
