Reasonable Service

You have probably worked with coworkers who will do what needs to be done but will do it quite grudgingly and under duress; anything extra is simply out of the question. Maybe you have even been that coworker yourself! You do not think much of that person, and hopefully you feel bad in those times when you are that person. Certainly, bosses have a problem with that attitude, as they consider it perfectly reasonable to expect a solid day’s work in return for a day’s pay. Supervising those unwilling to perform to standard is very frustrating.

Despite the above, this is precisely how you may often behave toward your Lord. How do you think this makes Him feel? The answer is—exactly how you feel about it! Paul was inspired to write this: “For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen” (Romans 11:36). The “therefore,” in the devotional verse links these two together. The word “reasonable,” is also of some interest. It comes from a Greek word meaning logic. In light of all that God has done for you in both your daily life and your eternal life, it is perfectly logical and reasonable that in return you would offer up a life of service.

What is your response to all that God has done? Do you roll your eyes and offer up just enough to make you feel as if you are a spiritual warrior? Are you the one who thinks listening to an hour sermon on Sunday morning is some great sacrifice to God? Or instead, are you the one being logical and going the extra mile?

JUST A THOUGHT: Jesus willingly drank from His cup; are you willing to drink from yours?
